The Constable Sloppy Jane

The Constable - Sloppy Jane
You happened years ago now
But yesterday, I saw a man kicking a dog in the street
And from the distance, I thought
That you might be the man
And God, I wanted that dog to be me

Well, I tried not to stare as he whimpered and died
Still attached to the leash
But in heaven, babe, there ain't no place to hide
'Cause some dogs sure do know how to bleed

Time spins around me
But I'll stand still
'Til I fall ill
Or 'til I fold down dead
(Still wishing my hands were your hands)
(As I hold my own head)

It was early this morning when I opened my eyes
To find that I couldn't see
So I ran out the driveway, straight into the highways
And slammed my head against the concrete

There was a thousand pink slugs out of my open skull
It was then I remembered the constable:
A once-handsome horse, rusted into a toy
Just as I, a great man, have grown into a scared little boy
