Gentlemen! Value Select here of the Value Select channel. Day... I have no clue, of being crash-landed on Antarctica. I am feverishly hallucinating, but I wanted to riff with you guys for a second, maybe stave off the snow sickness. [laughs] I just wanted to riff with you guys for a second!
As a comedian who prides himself on his try-hard editing abilities, a common question I get is, what editing software do I use? Well the answer's simple: Final Cut Pro X. Okay, goodbye! I'm just messing with you--
I wanted to take this opportunity to touch on something a little deeper: the DAW doesn't matter. My entire workflow, you can replicate on your phone for free. Only it's quicker and it's sleeker, and it's time to admit, you don't need better equipment!
As consumers, we have the best baseline tech in the history of the world. But folks are still clamoring for something new, thinking it's out there. Maybe if you're a professional physicist and you're solving a hyper-niche problem and you gotta get that V-Particle chip. Maybe. But if you're a creative, your gear is fine. If you're a musician, your guitar works. If you're a writer, use a pen! You don't need that fancy new Note app.
All of you creatives, I guarantee you, you have the things necessary to begin. To do that big project and to be finished with it. And only when you finish that project, THEN you go "Oh, you know what? It would've been super helpful if I had had X." You don't get that gear preemptively.
Too many of us are out there, getting things upfront. Purchasing junk like creative indulgences for the sin of not having started yet. It's been how many years? How many years has it been? You're stalling. There's the hard truth, plain and simple: you're stalling. You got the gear, maybe you don't got the talent, but you won't even give yourself a chance to see!
Just be fine with the basics. Just go. Just start today. Go and get cracked at creating cinematic masterpieces on your phone, to the extent that you can, which is pretty damn high! And when you're really grooving with the laptop, then you can go and get a low-budget entry-rate camera. Keep rising like that, and before you know it, you'll be right where you were moaning about wanting to be before with all the tools you could ever dream of. And you'll realize how little that tech means if the idea isn't sharp.
It's all about the idea. The idea is king. If just the thought of it entertains, you got a shot. If the idea is good, you have a chance at winning. If the idea is bad, get a new idea. Gear-- Gear cannot save you. Gear cannot save you from a lack of talent, from a lack of vision.
Look at the multi-million dollar movies that fail. Look at the independent ventures that succeed. It's not the gear. It's not the equipment. Right -- it's passion, it's energy, it's vision.
It's you.
