The sky drops a tiny starling into
A field of red spider-lilies. Clouds loom
Over the young creature, shedding their tears
Until they see their own reflection. Smeared
In mud, the fowl lies helpless on the ground
With battered wings. The boy from out of town
Notices the starling on his way home;
He cups the birdie from where it was thrown
Into the warmth and softness of his hands
Like mad, the fallen varmint struggles and
Bites its fingered cage, but the boy does not
Wane. He lifts the starling from where it rot
To the morning sun. The tiny starling
Looks to the light and spreads its battered wings
