Skeletons - Commentary - Papa Roach
[Jacoby Shaddix]
Oh dude, "Skeletons"… That song… That song went through a few different transitions but when I was laying down the vocals for that track, I wanted to just approach it from a very different angle as a vocalist, you know, so it’s very breathy and very whispery and, you know, was influenced by singers like Chino from the “Deftones” or Maria from “In This Moment”, you know, we're just kinda taking a different angle on the vocal performance, and, you know, lyrically it’s just, songs about secrets, you know, and you’re only as sick as your secrets and we all have 'em, no matter who you are, you at least got one, you know, but it’s about that process of building the wall around yourself and then tearing that wall back down. And it’s just that vulnerability of exposing yourself for who you really are and ah, you know, cause you face judgement when you expose yourself to people and ah, you know I think that when I am most vulnerable in the music and that’s what I like about the vocal. The vocal text and the verse are very… they sound vulnerable and, you know, and I put myself out there and I find that when I’m most vulnerable that’s when I’m most effective with music and with who I am, you know, I really wanna connect with…with the brokenness in people…you know, because I believe there’s a way out of the brokenness, you know, and I believe that, you know, my greatest weaknesses have become my greatest strengths in my life and so… "Skeletons" is just another testament to that
