There Won’t Be Trumpets (Live) - Bernadette Peters
[Spoken]
Last year I had, um, the great pleasure of being with a fabulous cast. It was Angela Lansbury, and it was Scott Bakula, and Madeleine Kahn, and it was a concert version of "Anyone Can Whistle" for GMHC, yet again. And, um, it was a show written by Steven Sondheim and Arthur Laurents, and Arthur, are you here tonight? Can you stand up and take the bow please? Arthur Laruents, who also wrote Gypsy!
Well I sang an amazing song on this amazing evening, and I'm going to sing it for you now.
[FAY]
Those smug little men
With their smug little schemes
They forgot one thing
The play isn't over by a long shot yet!
There are heroes in the world
Princes and heroes in the world
And one of them will save us
Wait and see!
Wait and see!
There won't be trumpets or bolts of fire
To say he's coming
No Roman candles, no angels' choir
No sound of distant drumming
He may not be the cavalier
Tall and graceful, fair and strong
Doesn't matter
Just as long as he comes along!
